Lecturing in a UK university is a demanding task, often with a lack of recognition over pay and conditions which many within the sector and beyond do not perceive as commensurate with the responsibilities and hours worked.

Student welfare, through exercising a duty of care, has become the responsibility of all lecturers - not just those involved in the support, counselling, or wellbeing departments. Likewise, students and student families have expectations from academic lecturers given the substantial sums of money they pay for the university education.
